What Summer Slowdown?

Well, it’s June. Summer is here. Memorial Day is behind us, school is out, vacations are underway. In past years I’ve sometimes written in the June newsletter about enjoying the slower pace of life in the summer, and about the seasonal lull in church activities.

But not this year! Instead of a summer slowdown, this month will be jam-packed with activities and special opportunities. After more than two years of mostly empty calendars, it seems like we’re quickly catching up on our missed chances for fun and inspirational functions.

June starts with the Southeastern Synod Assembly in Chattanooga, on the 3rd through the 5th. It’s the first in-person Synod Assembly in three years, and it will be good to gather Lutherans from all over the Southeast together. Willene McCarty and Simon Medina will represent CTK as voting members at the Assembly. I’ll attend the Assembly on Friday and Saturday, but I’ll be in back in church on Sunday.

In worship, we kick off the month of June with two of the principal festivals of the church year. June 5 is the Feast of Pentecost, the “birthday of the Christian church,” when we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit. June 12 is Trinity Sunday, which celebrates God, the Holy Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Our belief in one God who is three divine persons is the chief doctrine of the church, but also the most difficult to understand. Since we can’t understand it, we simply proclaim it and celebrate it!

On June 11 we’ll hold a yard sale on the front lawn of the church. It’s something that was scheduled for April of 2020, but had to be “postponed” for two years. We welcome donated items for the sale, and we’ll also need plenty of volunteers to help make it happen.

June 12, Trinity Sunday, is also the day a group from CTK will attend the Rome Braves baseball game after church.

Simon Medina and Willene McCarty pop up again on our calendar on June 18, when we’ll celebrate their marriage! It will be our first wedding at CTK since before the pandemic, and the congregation is invited.

Finally, we’ll travel to the Pocket Recreation Area for our annual outdoor worship service and picnic on June 26. This event is always a highlight of our year, combining worship and fellowship in a fun outdoor setting.

Look elsewhere in this newsletter for more information about these activities, and join us for an exciting month!

Peace,
